Dre Hocevar Trio: Coding Of Evidentiality
ByElectronics performer Sam Pluta makes his lone contribution to "Critical Discourse Analysis" and ignites the festivities with peculiar effects akin to mechanical grinding, offset by pianist Bram De Looze's delicate twinkles of sound, summoning an oddly balanced overture lit up by the leader's textural cymbals work. But they open it up with a sequence of changeable flows intensified by Hovecar's simmering and clustering pulses. On several tracks the band interweaves peppery discourses with certain passages that may elicit imagery of ancient rituals retrofitted for the turbulent societies many of us inhabit. And while the bulk of these pieces are nestled within the free-jazz schema, there's an underlying game plan that would intimate a pre-arranged set of goals and paradigms.
Cellist Lester St. Louis' "Cello Interlude No. 1" segues into "Second Portrait of the Exemplary," initiated with De Looze's classical recital type opus, moving forward to a menacing situation or perhaps priming the listener for the kill as the band progressively ups the ante amid expand and contract mechanisms. Indeed, the musicians' creative juices are gushing via these up-tempo movements and the soloists' fluid and powerfully assembled dialogues. From an avant-jazz perspective the ensemble doesn't contemplate where to go or what to do through slowly moving patterns. Consequently, Hovecar and associates take the bull by the horns and get down to business in rather prolific fashion.
