This edition of One Man's Jazz is the 600th done for Taint Radio, and to mark the occasion two albums that would have fit in perfectly with Black History Month in February, but good music has no timetable. Saxophonist David Bixler drew upon not on the jazz poetry of the great Black Poet, Langston Hughes, but rather on his concepts in writing and how he used words with pitch and rhythm and phrasing. The final result was The Langston Hughes Project Vol. 1; you'll hear the entire album in the second hour. Another poet—this time the current poet-in-residence at the Lincoln Center—Mahogany L. Browne hooks up with pianist Sean Mason to create the very contemporary Chrome Valley. And there are plenty of other new releases cracked open for the occasion: bass clarinetist Jason Stein, pianist Marilyn Crispell, bassist Damon Smith and drummer Adam Shead hit with Spi-ralling Horn, Polish saxophonist Milos Pieczonka's debut, German bassist Reza Askari & ROAR, Andy Milne's Time Will Tell, the veteran Anna Kaluza from Germany, and a pair from Scandinavia: Norway's The Core returning after a long hiatus and Finnish multi-reedist Jorma Tapio and his Puhti Trio. It's a great show. Dig in!
