Motherfucker is a new Danish trio headed by young reed player Henrik Pultz Melbye that aims to fuse the raw, angry and fiery free jazz of Peter Brötzmann, circa Machine Gun (FMP, 1968) with an aggressive metal attack and punk attitude. Melbye plays in another Danish group that explores the same aesthetics, SVIN, but in a more expansive manner. The trio's debut- released as a 7" 45 vinyl onlywas recorded after a successful support gig for the duo of Brötzmann and Norwegian drummer Paal Nilssen-Love in Copenhagen.
The three short pieces, titled "Mother I" "II" and "III" feature the massive drumming of Thomas Eiler, the wild, noisy whines of guitarist Jakob Thorkild Overgaard and the soaring cries of Melbye's baritone sax. The songs are short. The interplay pushes the trio to explore tight, restless, super fast and aggressive edges. Once the sonic argument is exhaustedin a highly distorted and dense mannerthe trio moves to the next piece. The longest piece, the four and half minutes of "Mother III," is the best realized one. From wild, primitive sonic mayhem rises a melodic theme, majestic in a commanding attack.
