Sashko Nikolovski: Not for Sale
In the world of jazz, the age at which an artist releases their debut album holds little significance. What truly matters is their ability to demonstrate compositional and playing prowess whenever the opportunity to record arises. Trombonist Sashko Nikolovski exemplifies this notion, with a wealth of experience and diversity which sets him apart. Having been an invaluable member of various ensembles, his musical portrait reveals a musician deeply rooted in jazz while also embracing a wide range of musical influences. The wait for his debut was indeed worthwhile, as he had a lot to express.

Not for Sale, is a remarkable testament to Nikolovski's extensive musical journey and exceptional talent. As a classically trained trombonist and a longstanding member of the Macedonian Opera (since the '80s), as well as a member of the old Big Band and the new ZJM Big Band, Nikolovski brings a wealth of experience and diversity to his jazz endeavours. His collaborations and performances over the years—alongside legendary artists such as Ray Charles, Kurt Elling, Luis Bonilla, Rambo Amadeus and many others including jam sessions with artists such as trumpeter Roy Hargrove and many others—have solidified his reputation as a significant sideman, producer, composer and arranger on the Macedonian music scene.

With Not for Sale, Nikolovski showcases his versatility as a composer, drawing from his rich background and experiences, to craft a captivating collection of songs. The eight compositions explore a wide range of sound colors and melodic patterns, creating a captivating and ever-changing musical landscape. The music seamlessly transitions between the energetic and adventurous spirit of '60s hard and post-bop to the soulful and melodic realm of soul-jazz reminiscent of the Blue Note era. Throughout, the playing is full-on, prodigious and often breath-taking. The compositions here are thoughtfully crafted and demonstrate Nikolovski's adventurousness as a composer. One of his notable skills as a composer is providing a setting which allows each musician to fully showcase their individual musicality. The musicians deftly assimilate the written music, quickly surpassing what is on the page to contribute fully to the musical tapestry. Each track is a testament to Nikolovski's compositional prowess and his ability to create music that engages on multiple levels.

Nikolovski's invitation to the talented musicians of the ZJM Big Band collective adds to the album's excellence. As a result, the ensemble brings a wealth of musical expertise and cohesion. Collaborating with the members of the ZJM Big Band, Nikolovski's leadership and influence shine through, creating a cohesive musical tapestry which exceeds the boundaries of written music. This is evident throughout the album, where the musicians' performances sound relaxed, warm, and playful. The chemistry is palpable and seemingly subliminal at times. The chemistry and camaraderie developed over the years shine through, creating an atmosphere of musical synergy.

Not for Sale is an impressive debut album. It showcases Sashko Nikolovski as a musician of immense talent, maturity, and artistic vision. This superbly-crafted statement resonates with authenticity and sophistication, standing as a testament to Nikolovski's musical journey.
