Canadian expat-saxophonist Peter Van Huffel has found a place amidst that hotbed of free-wheeling music in Berlin, and his latest release with his band Callisto reinforces his position as one of the exciting voices working today. Meandering Demons out on Clean Feed introduces a newer band with (Clean Feed) with another Canadian who spends a lot of time in Berlin, trumpeter Lina Allemano, Antonis Anissegos on piano and electronics and Joe Hertenstein on drums. Clean Feed's also just released another saxophone of considerable talents: Spain's Liba Villavecchia. His new album, Muracik features his trio with the addition of Portuguese trumpeter Luis Vincente. I finally got Mary Halvorson's new em>Cloudward, and it's another in a growing line of excellent music from this great guitarist. More saxophonists featured in this episode too: Kevin Sun with Mute, James Brandon Lewis with the The Messthetics, and Boston's Charlie Kohlhase. Riley by trumpeter Riley Mulkerhar gets cracked open for the first time, the Earshift Orchestra from Sydney Australia debuts Dischordia, and there's another track from Italian drummer Tiziano Tononi's expression of support and concern for the North American First Peoples with his very heartfelt The Winter Counts (We'll Still Be Here). It's a very full show of music. Enjoy!
