From Hot‘lanta (Atlanta, Georgia) the skillful and polished sound of saxophonist David Freeman rings loud and true. His self-titled debut recording features strong compositions and tight musicianship from a quartet that’s not afraid to mix it up. The mix comes in various styles that highlight Freeman on tenor, soprano, and Akai EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument).

Freeman chops are impressive as he pours out lengthy but interesting solos. His tenor sound is thick yet flowing as he leads his quartet on the Latin burner “Get A Rope,” with its upbeat samba feel. Equally impressive on the alto, he shines on the selection “For Beth” as the quartet stretches the swing in style.

The strength of Freeman's quartet lies not only in proficient rhythm and support, but memorable solo spots. Guitarist Dan Baraszu is of particular interest as he shares the bulk of the spotlight with outstanding fret work and guitar approaches ranging from the smooth lines of Joe Pass to the rock/fusion energy of Scott Henderson.

David Freeman appears to be open not only to various styles, but also formats. The composition “Presence” features strange and alien soundscapes with Freeman on EWI and Moore on over-amped bass.
