Francois Carrier Trio: Intuition

The music on this 77 minute disc (!) was composed by Mr. Carrier with the exception of John Coltrane’s "Lonnie’s Lament." Indeed, the music of John Coltrane appears to be a talisman for these excellent musicians. They honor Trane’s memory by carrying on the spirit of his musical quest in their own voices.

It is difficult to cite high points in this consistently fine recording. One of my favorites is "The Way I Thought," a rollicking, dancing performance which has the wit and unpredictability of a Henry Threadgill tune. In fact, this band reminds me a lot of Air, Mr. Threadgill’s great sax / bass / drums trio of the 1980’s. The Coltrane influence is evident on the minor key waltz, "Petit Marius Deviendra Grand" and the incendiary improvisations of "Organic Purity" and the title track. Throughout, the bass of Pierre Cote and the drums of Francois Cote are brilliantly simpatico. The bass sound is sensual and dark, the drums dance and cymbals shimmer without a moment of overplaying.

Intuition is evidence of the dedication and commitment of the Francois Carrier Trio. They create true beauty within the traditions and influences in which all jazz musicians must operate. A moving example of human emotion flowing in a pure musical expression, devoid of ego and grandstanding,

Intuition will be available domestically in the near future through Allegro distribution. Fans of Coltrane and Threadgill will particularly enjoy this music, but the sound of the human heart may inspire anyone. Listen and be inspired.
