Più che un mero omaggio a Erik Satie, Dan Willis opera una superba ristrutturazione delle già rivoluzionarie partiture originali mediante l'aggiunta di parti composte per l'occasione. Il musicista statunitense si conferma così autorevole esponente contemporaneo di una musicalità trasversale, aperta alle contaminazioni. È sufficiente l'ascolto del brano di apertura, "Gnossienne # 7," per rendersi conto di quanto poco convenzionale sia questo progetto.

Le originarie partiture per pianoforte vengono arricchite da un sostrato contemporaneo, che pesca nei brillanti colori del funky e della musica klezmer grazie ad un originale tessuto timbrico dove trovano spazio duduk, oboe e flauti cinesi. Il terzo episodio di "Gnossienne" è magistrale nella sua moderna visuale e sintetizza lo spirito di un lavoro estremamente sofisticato negli arrangiamenti, con dinamiche in continuo mutamento.

Tra beats travolgenti e irriverenti, non manca nel disco quella dimensione elegiaca tipica delle partiture originali. Fantasioso è l'apporto dei solisti, abili nel coniugare complessità armonica e cantabilità. Il loro contributo è decisivo nell'affrontare pagine arcinote con piglio dissacrante ed iconoclasta. Per l'ascoltatore è una continua sorpresa questo percorso polimorfo fra sonorità acide ed impasti timbrici insoliti, ben stratificati nel brano di chiusura, "Vexations."
