Goldie: Goldie.co.uk
By
According to the liner notes, Goldie believes this mix represents numerous reasons why drum & bass is not dead. Indeed the tracks on the disc deliver a kind of dark-hued, life-affirming energy with pounds of bass and rolling breakbeats. Total Science’s "Champion Sound" unleashes a distorted bass line and frenetic breaks of industrial strength while Marcus Inatalex’ "Lose Control" is a menacingly hypnotic workout. At 18 tracks deep, it definitely requires a level of devotion to pay attention throughout; the densely mixed tracks provide little in the way of respite. If you make it to the end of the mix, there’s couple of treats in the shape of Marcus Intalex’ "Universe" which offers a more spacious beatscape, Die’s lively "To Step" and Uncut’s "Midnight." Goldie.co.uk has jungle music screaming ‘look at me, I’m still here’ – whether or not you choose to listen depends on whether you like being yelled at. On this album drum & bass furiously re-affirms its presence, which is undeniable, but unlike Goldie’s previous work it does nothing in the way of re-defining itself. If you like your drum & bass hard, heavy and unrelenting this is for you, otherwise approach with caution.
