Negative Press Project: The Victorious Sessions
ByThe band's standout feature is its ability to balance improvisation with structured composition amid jazz fusion, Afro-Cuban, West-African, classic West Coast "cool" and nods to the big-band era. The jazz influence is evident in the spontaneous solos and vivacious interplay between the musicians, while the indie rock elements bring a fresh, modern feel to the music. This fusion creates an atmospheric and emotionally charged listening experience.
The Victorious Sessions is not just about the music but the mood it creates. Each track introduces a sense of journey and exploration, inviting the listener to interpret the music in their own way. The production quality is top-notch, ensuring that the clarity and depth of each instrument is suitably captured, adding to the alluring experience.
On "Squares" they generate a pungent Latin groove, where pianist Ruthie Dineen establishes the flow via ascending chord progressions amid the improv quotient that provides direction atop a simmering theme, topped off with a festive approach and fervent sax soloing by Tony Peebles and Chris Sullivan. Yet they switch gears during "Table for Three," highlighted by soothing backdrops and followed by a sense of triumph, complete with lucid imagery of a gallant expedition, overcoming adversity.
The final piece, "Honey," is a soliloquy of sorts, framed by brash horns and a somber melody. Hence, it is a ballad with a positive message. Overall, the production surfaces as a bold statement that stands out. It is an evolving landscape and a shining example of what happens when talented musicians are not afraid to experiment and push the limits of the native jazz vernacular.
